So fun to watch the bluebirds

I received this as a gift. I was disappointed at first, because the bluebirds had trouble getting in. Once they figured out to come in the blue end, they started to line up to get the meal worms. It's not a constant stream; they've learned to take turns. We enjoy watching them out the window when we eat our meals. They go through two mealworm cups a day (equivalent of one measuring cup.) Best of all, the starlings can't get in.

Addition of Perches

When I first put it out, I removed one of the sides so the bluebirds could get use to finding food there. Well so did all the unwanted birds know it was there. When I put the side back on, I added perches so they could enter easily. I found they didn't always get in the feeder. The perches are awesome. i recommend future models have perches added.

Bluebird Feeder 2.0

This feeder allows smaller birds to eat, without being ran off by bigger birds. Only small birds can fit through the holes. In one cup,I put dried mealworms and the other cup is shelled sunflower seeds. Both of which blackbirds would devour if they could get to them. LOVE this feeder!!!

Truly starling-proof!

This is the first supposedly starling-proof mealworm feeder I've bought that starlings absolutely CANNOT find a way to infiltrate, so it gets my applause for that. As far as bluebird-friendliness... as I write this, a male bluebird just entered from one of the square end-panel holes, fed for a minute, and then flew out the opposite side's hole. In the weeks that I've had this feeder hanging, here's what I've noticed: it takes bluebirds a bit of time to figure out how to enter/exit the feeder, but eventually they get the hang of it and it's really fun to watch once they do. On mine, they do not use the round holes in the clear acrylic side panels--I've watched them flutter around inside the feeder like they can sense some kind of exit on the side, but I suspect their vision prevents them from seeing the cutouts. They come and go fairly easily from the square end-panel cutouts, though; the clearance is close but doesn't seem uncomfortable for them once they get brave enough to try. The dimensions of this feeder prevent more than one bird from being inside at the same time; I've watched a single bluebird feeding inside while its mate grips onto the end of the outside, but they won't share space inside (unlike other, bigger bluebird feeders I've bought where a mating pair can both feed at the same time). So, if you hang one of these near a bluebird nest box, it might get dicey once a brood has fledged and they stay close to their momma while she continues to mouth-feed them. The two feeder cups are nicely removable, but they seem a bit deeper than necessary and I've had to dump out the dregs before refilling them. Other plusses: the whole feeder is easy to clean; the clear acrylic roof makes it easy to look down from a second-story window and see who's inside feeding; and the feeder attracts other songbirds (I've seen black-capped chickadees and Carolina wrens both use it). All in all, I'm thrilled with how well it thwarts bully birds, which is the main reason I bought it. Just know that there are a couple of limitations to its design.

Well constructed except when it rains. Disappointing outcome so far

I've had this for a month now. We definitely have bluebirds and several other small birds in the yard, but not one bird has gone into this feeder. I tried moving it away from the other bird feeders as I read suggested somewhere; adding a mealworm suet cake, thinking it might attract them, but still nothing. A red squirrel happily squeezed himself in and out several times and gobbled up the mealworms we keep putting in there though.....When it rains, the rain pours through the holes and sits in the mealworm cups, filling with water and soaking the mealworms, rendering them undesirable, I'd presume I'd love to have some suggestions on remedy for all these challenges.
