Description

Control insects and rodents by attracting Screech Owls to your yard

Screech Owls are one of the easiest owls to attract to your area as they are found widely across the United States. Screech owls are always looking for a place to call home. The little 7" tall owls can become quite tame and will help keep your insect and rodent population under control. The small Screech Owls and Saw-whet Owls can have a hard time finding natural cavities because of the competition from other birds. Our Cedar Screech Owl Nest Box is a very popular alternative.

Where Should I Mount my Box?

Screech Owls like to nest in deep woods, preferably near swamps. Likes coniferous woods and evergreen thickets in parks and gardens. For best results mount 10 to 20 feet high in a large, dense tree. You may want to position this cedar birdhouse away from the houses of other birds.

Breeds from southeastern Alaska east across central Canada to Nova Scotia and south to southern California, Arizona, Illinois, North Carolina (in mountains) and Connecticut. Winters in breeding range and south to Arkansas and North Carolina.

Worth the wait.

I've had this owl box for almost 6 years and finally this year I have a family of screech owls that have taken up residence. I just took the pictures today of my first glimpse at the baby(s) inside. Well worth it. If there is a a con where I live are many squirrels and they have used it many times, I'm honestly surprised the owls are using it because I haven't cleaned it out this year yet and thought it was full of leaves.

Box is Great (screws not so much)

This is my second box that I have purchased from JC. The first one I put up in 2022. While I didn’t get any Eastern Screech Owls (that I know of) squirrels and Eastern Bluebirds have used it from time to time. I decided to put a second box up about 130 feet from the first one in a silver maple tree. We’ll see if it gets used.Likes: I like the overall construction and durability of the box. The first one has held up well in the Tennessee weather.Dislikes: The screws that come with it are cheap, bend easy, and sometimes they aren’t even hollowed out enough to get your bit in. You also may have to take the door off to have enough room for your impact or drill when mounting.Overall I am pleased with the box. The screws included with it definitely need to be replaced with a better ones. I’m still giving 5 stars though because I like the box. I’m hoping the second box will help attract an owl.

Finally worked

We hung the house in the middle of summer which only attracted a family of squirrels. Today on 4/22 my wife and I went outside to look in the garden when I saw some unusual ears sticking up in the opening. After a little waiting we got our first glimpse of the new resident. As for the house, it's very well made and sturdy. The squirrels seemed to love it and now an owl has taken a fancy to it. I don't know what kind of mess the squirrels left inside, but I guess I'll need to test just how easy it is to clean soon.

Quality Craftmanship

This saw-wet owl house is very well-made, with top-quality materials and the customer service is excellent. I had a question about squirrels taking over the house and I was advised that the owls are natural predators of squirrels which may help keep them away. Additionally though, I purchased a set of Bird Spikes from amazon and installed them around the tree trunk a few feet off the ground to keep squirrels from climbing up the trunk in the first place - also highly recommended. So, we wait patiently but with eager anticipation to see the first occupants take up residence. I found it helpful to pre-drill holes in the tree trunk for the provided screws, through four the holes already provided in the back of the house, to set the screws completely into the trunk. Until I did that the screws didn't set the house entirely against the trunk.

Excellent house but tough to mount

Excellent, well-made house - will definitely purchase again in the future. I recommend first tying a string or rope tightly around the tree and under the roof of the house so that it will stay in place during install. Then unscrew the floor of the house so that you have easy drill access to the back. Next I found it necessary to predrill holes into the tree rather than allow the **** to self-tap. I also replaced the mounting screws with 2.5” star drive deck screws because the provided phillips head screws were stripping under the high torque (also difficult to get full pressure when up on a ladder). I staggered the **** heights to give increased stability. Remove the string/rope once installed.
