We’ve tried everything to keep squirrels from eating from the bird feeders and spilling seed. So far, they’ve gotten on top of this feeder and when they press the bar, it closes. So it works as promised. I’ll be watching to see if the squirrels figure out another way. They’re welcome to eat what the birds spill but I want them off the feeder!
Love the durable, weatherproof build of this ground feeder, and its sturdy, elevated legs that keep the seed above snowy or wet ground. But the BEST feature by far is its unique, removable tray with handle. So simple to remove and fill. So easy to take inside and thoroughly clean. And so convenient for whisking seed away at night to keep raccoons and rodents from feasting. I now own three different styles of JC Wildlife bird feeders, and all have been well worth the investment!
I have been looking for an alternative feeder to deter pesky starlings while allowing bluebirds to feel safer inside. This feeder seems to be the perfect solution; however, a few things can be improved. The feeder's height could be increased while maintaining the same access features so bluebirds don't feel caged and have more room to fly out easily. The S hook connector isn't sturdy enough to hold both ends together; I would suggest a clip or metal ring that can keep the ends together permanently since that wouldn't prevent them from being adjusted while holding it together. Unfortunately, none of my bluebird visitors have felt enticed to access the feeder. However, Carolina wrens and other small birds have been feeding from the mealworms inside. I hope that, in due time, bluebirds will feel curious and access the feeder.
