K&H suggests on their website that the filter be replaced every 1-2 months and cleaned weekly. They state that you will feel the filter begin to soften and break down over time, so they suggest whenever you feel the filter begin to soften during the weekly cleaning, you should use your best judgment on when to replace the filter.
